2. Scottie's obsession with recreating madeleine is very very disturbing, the lack of self worth on Judy's part is ridiculous, while Scottie's desire to make the woman that he loved is equally as disturbing. Judy is in love with Scottie but she shows no respect for herself by doing exactly what Scottie wants her to do. To make the situation even worse is that Judy knows that she has done Scottie wrong by conning him. Scottie on the other hand is too aggressive and it is very intimidating towards Judy, she has no say in the situations when Scottie is picking out the clothes for her to wear or when he is making her go up the stairs with him at the Spanish mission. The demands that Scottie has are borderline insane and it shows that he does not love Judy, he loves the thought of her being Madeleine. This is not a love story, it is as far from a love story as it can get, this movie depicts a man that fell in love and did everything he could do to bring back the memory that he had of her. And once Scottie has figured out what has been done, he leads Judy to her death; Scottie did not physically kill Judy, but he set the stage for it and the guilt that Judy had from conning Scottie overtook her and she jumped when a dark figure came through the door, almost as if death had come to collect the ghost that had emerged from the jade light.

Freaks has been depicted as a melodrama but also a horror film as well. I am partial to the horror film depiction because of the very strong horror aspects of the film towards the end. This is scene when the film starts to change, and when Cleopatra gets a little drunk and starts making fun of and belittling the "freaks". The reaction from the freaks indicates the beginning of the rise of horror.

A horror film is supposed to draw out a negative feeling when you watch it. There is no doubt that the following scene, after Cleopatra yells at the freaks, that a negative emotion is evoked when she had poisoned Hans.
By this scene, the freaks are after Cleopatra and they are crawling, the emotion that comes is fear. There are a gang of deformed freaks that all want to get you, at this point the freaks have lost any humanity that they had left by going after Cleopatra and making her into one of them.
The freaks mutilate Cleopatra and turn her into a chicken lady, this was what shocked audiences, this is the reason why there was so much controversy with the film. Freaks is a definite horror film, although it may not rise to the level of production of this day and age, the film did an excellent job of scaring the audience and having many of the typical elements of a horror film. Aspects such as a calm introduction, and then a turning point that starts the horror. It evokes fear from the audience.

20th Century Film Week 2

Keaton has been praised on his modernity, which can be seen most typically in his gags. They tend to involve some dangerous situation such as a building falling or a wall falling and Keaton has for some reason been so lucky to escape the falling building or wall by standing in the safe zone around the crumbling building, or standing exactly where the window would be in a wall. His style for gags was widely admired as modern based on the environment of the gag and the planning that went into the shooting the scene. The other area that Keaton is praised in is his cinematic tricks; from Sherlock Jr. Keaton superimposes himself to show himself napping while the second part of him is watching the film being played.
I find myself really enjoying the physical stunts that Keaton did in Sherlock Jr. it really shows how well Keaton could really perform in those stunt situations. As far as his gags, I think it was a first for many gags just like it later on through the present in film.
